The Fantastic Life

Deep Practice is for just a few areas in your life

The most important aspect of deliberate practice is that you NEED to know what you are deliberately practicing for.” Achieving the Fantastic Life is about knowing where you want to go, and the road you will take to get you there.
The video posted by Dr. Cobb below discusses the development of skills and the process for deliberate practice.

The development of any skill is obtained by the following 3-step process:

  1. Play:
  • First exposure to something.
  • This step is supposed to be fun.
  • Testing to find out what you like and don’t like.
  • The biggest obstacle of the play stage is conquering the fear of trying something new.
  1. Flow:
  • Flow is playing 4% above your current level or capacity.  You play better than you can because you are in flow.
  • More focused than just playing.
  • Flow comes when you are competing.
  • When you have achieved flow you typically feel a euphoric high which is what motivates you to continuously pursue that skill and eventually leads you to deep practice.
  1. Deep Practice:
  • The last stage of the process and is much different than flow and harder.
  • This is the highest level of focus.
  • There is a 40 – 50% error rate as you try to get better.
  • It’s hard, slow and specific.
  • This is where all the growth happens!

Understanding the 3-step process is essential to achieving Deep Practice on the very few areas that you truly want to excel in.

Rule #11 from my book The Fantastic Life: The Growth Paradigm
Growth doesn’t happen overnight. Growth happens when you make a conscious effort to improve. Learning to apply the process of Deep Practice to areas of your life in which you wish to grow, will help you improve in other areas of your life as well.

Before deliberate practice comes play.

This week I’m sharing the idea that once you figure out what you like, via play, you can then move into the next two levels of training, flow and deep practice.

Move well,
