The Fantastic Life

30 Things You’ll Regret

I am fortunate that I don’t regret much of my life. That’s just me.  I take each lesson (and believe me, I get schooled every single day) and try to learn, adjust, and grow from it.

Today, let’s pick one or two of the 30 items below and work on them so that we will not regret them later in life.  Here are the two I picked (I highlighted more below in case I get these done.):

Not stopping to appreciate the moment.  I have been a “check-the-box” guy my whole life. I am working on catching the moment and making my life about the moments.
Not being grateful. I am writing in my gratitude journal every day this year. I am trying to build a strong and powerful ritual/habit.

What can you work on this next month so that you will not regret it later in life?  I know I don’t need to say it but I will anyway — Living The Fantastic Life means you are not living your life in regret.

Rule #4 from my book The Fantastic Life: There are Two Kinds of Pain
The pain of regret hits us when we can’t handle the pain of discipline. But I promise you that regret hurts longer in the hard run. Discipline yourself now to form better habits, and avoid future regret.

30 Things You’ll Regret When You’re Older

By: David Wolfe

We’d all like to live life with no regrets, and some have truly mastered that mantra. But for most, certain people and experiences slip through our fingers from time to time, and we’re left wondering “what if?” If you often find yourself in situations where you’re wondering if you should go for it or hold back, these 30 things you’re likely to regret might help you decide.

1. Being afraid of change
Change can be scary, but don’t let that stop you. Moving, traveling, ending a bad relationship, taking a new job… Putting your fear aside to take these big steps in life can lead you to greater opportunities.

2. Not learning another language
There are so many different cultures, countries, customs and languages to explore. Learning another language won’t just be fun, it will expand your knowledge and give your resume a boost!

3. Staying in a bad relationship
Spending months or years in a bad relationship is a complete waste of time. Once you get out, you’ll only wish you had made the break sooner.

4. Not using sunscreen
While you might be purposefully forgoing sunscreen in hopes of getting a golden tan, you could be seriously damaging your skin. Wrinkles, moles and skin cancer can be avoided if you protect yourself.

5. Not traveling when you had the chance
You might think, “I’ll travel in a few years when I have the time/money,” but the truth is, the older you become, the harder it is to drop everything and travel. There’s no time like the present.

6. Not exercising
You don’t need to be a gym buff to make physical fitness a priority. Regular exercise has been shown to improve overall health in numerous ways, keeping the body healthy and strong. If a gym isn’t your scene, go for a hike, take a jog, ride your bike or take yoga classes.

7. Letting society define you
Don’t let your gender, race, age, socioeconomic status, religion or anything else hold you back from following your dreams. Find your passion and be strong enough to live it, despite the opinions of others.

8. Not listening to your parents’ advice
As much as we hate when they’re right, parents do come up with good advice. Learn to really listen and appreciate their suggestions and concerns.

9. Being afraid to say “I love you”
Saying those three little words can be intimidating, but missing your chance could be devastating. If you truly feel it, let the other person know.

10. Staying at a terrible job
We all have bills to pay, and taking jobs we aren’t exactly enthusiastic about is often necessary to stay afloat. But look for a way to improve your situation instead of simply accepting it.

11. Being self-absorbed
If you go through life caring only about yourself, you’ll end up with no one by your side. Learn to care about the needs of those around you.

12. Caring too much about what others think
No matter what you do, there will always be someone who criticizes you. Learn to rise above.

13. Not standing up for yourself
Don’t let others belittle your ideas or opinions. Stand tall for what you believe in and let your voice be heard.

14. Holding grudges
People will hurt you, it’s inevitable. But every minute you spend holding a grudge and being angry is time that they’re taking from you. Learn to move on.

15. Putting others’ dreams before your own
While it’s great to help others accomplish their goals, don’t let your own dreams take a backseat.

16. Working too much
Being a hard worker is a great trait to have. But know that there are other things that are much more important, like enjoying life and spending time with those you care about.

17. Not learning how to cook
Even learning how to prepare one delicious meal will give you a sense of satisfaction. It’s great to try something new!

18. Clinging to people who hurt you
People come in and out of our lives for different reasons. If someone is constantly hurting you, know that it’s time to cut them out of your life for your own well-being and happiness.

19. Failing to finish what you started
As much as you might want to quit, remember that there is strength in having the courage to finish what you started.

20. Not stopping to appreciate the moment
This world is so fast-paced that we often don’t have time to enjoy it. Know when to slow down and appreciate the beauty in each moment.

  21. Not spending enough time with loved ones
You’ll regret being too busy to attend a family event, or to just stop over and visit. There will be a time when the people you love aren’t around anymore. Don’t miss your chance.

22. Never taking a big risk
Choosing to take a risk could end up changing your life. Don’t be afraid to go after what you want.

23. Worrying too much
There will always be something to worry about, but constantly stressing can seriously affect your health. Choose to prioritize and do the best you can.

24. Getting caught up in drama
Being involved in drama is not only a waste of time, it can drain you. Steer clear from anyone or any situation that spews negative energy.

25. Not being grateful
Recognize the amazing people in your life and count your blessings. Even when things are tough, there is always something to be grateful for.

26. Thinking you don’t need friends
You might be just fine on your own, but great friends are an amazing gift. True friends know how to cheer you up, they support you, and motivate you, and they always have your back.

27. Never mastering a hobby
Find something you enjoy doing and go the extra mile. You’ll have fun, you’ll feel accomplished and you’ll learn something new!

28. Not reading enough
It often seems like reading is impossible with the busy lives we lead. But taking time to read can expand your knowledge, your vocabulary and your mind. Whatever genre you prefer, pick up a book and allow your mind to wander.

29. Not trying hard enough in school
While just getting by is often enough to graduate, why not challenge yourself to do the best you can? Make your degree something you are truly proud of.

30. Not volunteering enough
Whether you choose to build houses, plant trees or volunteer at a soup kitchen, there is always something you can do to make the world a better place.

It’s never too late!
